Last Thursday, fans got a first look at the upcoming DC 'Elseworld' film– "Gotham by Gaslight", in an 8 minute long teaser vignette. The movie is an original work by Bruce Timm, and a cast of familiar names, although it draws heavy inspiration from the original source material comic book of the same title. With no official release date yet, the film is predicted to come out sometime in early 2018, or possibly sooner.
Here's the first look video:
This is going to be the first official "Elseworld" animated film in the DC universe, and as such, the team behind the movie is excited to see what they can do while pushing the boundaries and limits of each character. Notably, Batman's eyes will be visible under his cowl (as opposed to the plain white slits usually) and the writers used that design choice to bring a more human side to Batman in the story.
And while many of Bruce Wayne's usual friends and nemeses have been transferred over to their Foggy London-era counterparts, this will be the first time that Batman goes toe-to-toe with Jack the Ripper, outside of the comics. According to the Sneak Peek, it's to be expected that Batman's role as a detective will be heavily emphasized, in a way that's a throwback to the original comics from the 40s.
